For Supervisors In Matrix activities, participants examine the prompt and select answers from an image grid. You prepare the source material, upload the answer images and identify the answer key used for automatic marking. This format can support understanding a sign language video and associating its content with a visual representation.
Reception activity in Matrix format, with a video, four selectable images and navigation controls.

Participant view: video prompt and answers in an image grid.

Reception is the activity type; Matrix is the selected format. In the supplied screenshots, the matrix is a grid of visual answer options, rather than a row-and-column matching exercise. The screenshots are in English; the controls are explained throughout this page.

Plan the question and images

Decide which information participants should recognise in the source material. Then choose images that allow them to distinguish the correct answer from the other options. This example illustrates planning; it does not interpret the signing in the screenshot videos. The four images shown also belong to the example and do not establish a required number of answer options. Choose clear, relevant images. Avoid differences in size, quality or prominence that reveal the answer without requiring understanding of the material. State in the instructions how many images participants should select, according to the configuration used.

Create the activity

Choose Reception and the Matrix format

Enter the Space, open Assessment Activities and click Add activity.Check the selected Space, choose Reception and then Matrix. Review the selection before continuing. In the Description tab, enter the activity name and instructions. Explain which material to examine and how to select the images. If you use an instruction video, prepare it in the appropriate sign language for your audience. Also check the activity status.

Open the summary and add a question

Select Questions Summary. Check the Reception and Matrix labels. The Introduction video is optional and appears before the questions. Use it to introduce the context of the overall activity. In Activity questions, click Add Question.

The Self-assessment questions section belongs to a separate set of questions and has its own add button.

Prepare the prompt and source material

Complete Question Title with a clear question or instruction.Add Topic, Text, Video and Image blocks as needed for the task. The prompt video presents the content needed to answer; it differs from the activity instruction video and the introduction video.
Matrix question editor with a title, video upload or recording, Display video only once option and content blocks.

Prompt: title, question video and content blocks.

For the video, use Upload or Record. Check Display video only once and enable this restriction only when it forms part of the activity objective. Inform participants of the restriction.

Upload images and mark the answer key

In the Answer section, click Upload images.Check the thumbnails and the identification of each file. Images uploaded in this section are answer options; an image added to the prompt blocks has a different purpose.Tick Correct Answer for the image that matches the answer key. Review all options to ensure no incorrect option remains ticked.

Image answer options: upload, answer key and answer percentage.

The example offers Evenly distribute and Manual distribution in the Weight distribution of scoring area. The 80% shown in the screenshot is illustrative. It does not define the activity pass score or the activity weight in the Space. When adding, removing or changing images, check the answer key and scoring again.

Prepare question feedback

Use Add feedback, when available, to provide an explanation that helps participants understand the content. The illustrated form offers video upload or recording, optional .vtt subtitles, markers and an optional text field.
Feedback form with Upload and Record, video field, .vtt subtitles, Add marker and optional text.

Feedback: video, subtitles, markers and optional text.

Relate the feedback to the source material. For example: “Return to the section where the item is mentioned and notice which features allow you to associate it with the image.”The feedback shown relates to the question as a whole. Do not assume that each image has separate feedback.

Review and finish the question

Check the prompt, play the video and review the images, answer key, percentages and feedback.Click Done to return to the summary. Confirm that the question appears in the list and repeat the process to add further questions.Finishing a question does not finish the entire activity. Also review the full set and evaluation settings.
Check the limit shown in each video field. The prompt example indicates 100 MB; the feedback example indicates 250 MB. The IntSL Video label belongs to the illustrated installation: use the appropriate sign language for your audience.

Configure assessment

In the summary, open Evaluation Settings.

Points, scores and attempts

The supplied screen shows Scale disabled with the message “Reception type activities do not use scales”. The illustrated Reception workflow does not require a performance scale.
Settings with Scale disabled and a notice that Reception does not use scales, plus Points, Grade to pass, Max grade, Attempts and Order of questions.

Assessment: disabled scale, points, scores and attempts.

The fields display Default in the screenshot. Open the options in your installation and check the actual values; the label alone does not state how many attempts are allowed or what the score will be. The answer key, image percentages and activity points have different roles. The answer key identifies the correct images; percentages configure answer scoring; points and reference scores belong to the activity assessment.
Settings for question and answer order, review, duration, behaviour when time expires, final summary and start and close dates.

Assessment: order, review, time and availability.

The duration of an attempt differs from the availability period. Automatic marking also differs from releasing results: check the review options. The screen also includes a Criteria Set-up area. Its presence does not replace the image answer key or mean that a scale is required for the Reception workflow shown.

Assess and support participants

See guidance on monitoring, assessment and releasing results.

Include self-assessment, if desired

In Questions Summary, use the Add Question button in the Self-assessment questions section. Prepare a reflective question, such as “How would you assess your understanding of the information needed to associate the video with the images?” When the self-assessment form offers a scale and a question video, configure them according to the task. This scale belongs to self-assessment, which differs from automatic marking of Matrix questions. On returning to the summary, check that the question appears in the self-assessment list.

Check the participant experience

During the activity, participants examine the prompt and select images in the grid. The example shows four options and navigation controls between questions. In the supplied review screen, a selected image has a correct-answer indicator. The question set also displays result indicators.

Check how these indicators are displayed alongside the activity review options. The image illustrates a result view; it does not guarantee that the answer key is visible throughout an attempt.
