# Configure assessment scales

> Create assessment scales, define performance ranges and explain levels in sign language.

**For supervisors**

An **assessment scale** defines how performance is presented: for example, as a percentage or as levels such as **Not competent** and **Competent**. In VisuoLab, you can create scales with ranges from 0% to 100%, name their levels and add sign language videos explaining each one.

Prepare the scale around the learning objective. Names should help both the evaluator and the person receiving the result understand the performance observed.

<Note>
  The screenshots illustrate setup and are in English. The instructions explain the fields and buttons. Names, available scales and options may vary by installation.
</Note>

## Understand the role of a scale

| Element | What it defines | Illustrative example |
| - | - | - |
| **Criterion** | The aspect observed in the production. | Clarity of signing. |
| **Scale** | The levels used to express performance. | Developing, Adequate and Advanced. |
| **Weight** | How much an aspect contributes to the result. | Clarity of signing with a weight of 30%. |

The scale answers **“how do we express performance?”**; the criterion answers **“what do we observe?”**. The weight indicates the contribution to the assessment calculation.

A scale’s ranges also differ from the weights of criteria, questions and activities in a Space. Configure each element in its corresponding location.

## View available scales

In the Multifunctional Room, open **Scales**. Check registered titles and levels before creating a new scale.

Scales can be reused across Spaces and selected in activities. Check whether an existing option already fits your task. The screen also offers edit and delete controls according to profile permissions.

Before modifying a scale already used by the team, coordinate with activity owners to maintain a clear assessment reference.

## Create and configure a scale

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start setup and enter a title" icon="pen-to-square">
    Select **Add New Scale**. In **Scale title**, enter a name that identifies its purpose, such as **Performance in narrative comprehension**.

    Avoid generic titles like “Scale 1”, which make selection harder when several options exist.

    <Frame caption="Creation form: title, distribution, range, level name and explanatory video.">
      <img src="https://mintcdn.com/levante-lab/1UL7fbc4a1rMs5Mp/images/supervisor-scales/create-scale.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=1UL7fbc4a1rMs5Mp&q=85&s=09279d6d2711c6755ae75f838c2e571a" alt="Scale creation form with title, equal or manual distribution, range control and level name field." style={{ width: "100%", maxWidth: "720px", display: "block", margin: "0 auto" }} loading="lazy" width="1366" height="1754" data-path="images/supervisor-scales/create-scale.png" />
    </Frame>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose distribution and organize ranges" icon="sliders">
    The form offers **Evenly distribute** and **Manual distribution**. Choose the appropriate option and check each range’s limits.

    With manual distribution, adjust the limits using the displayed controls. Select **Add range** to include the other levels you need.

    Together, the ranges must cover **the full interval from 0% to 100%**. Do not leave any part unclassified, and check the boundaries between consecutive ranges.

    This distribution organizes the **scale’s** intervals. It does not set the weight of a criterion or activity.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the performance levels" icon="list-check">
    In **Range Value** or **Value**, enter the name of the level corresponding to each interval.

    The illustrated example uses **Not competent** and **Competent**. These belong to a particular scale and are not mandatory classifications for all activities.

    <Accordion title="View the two-level example" icon="ruler">
      <Frame caption="Mockup example: two ranges with level names and a video field for each.">
        <img src="https://mintcdn.com/levante-lab/1UL7fbc4a1rMs5Mp/images/supervisor-scales/scale-levels.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=1UL7fbc4a1rMs5Mp&q=85&s=1fb999aa30a8686c5af1dc3caee93eb2" alt="Scale with Not competent and Competent levels, each with its interval and explanatory video." style={{ width: "100%", maxWidth: "760px", display: "block", margin: "0 auto" }} loading="lazy" width="1366" height="2614" data-path="images/supervisor-scales/scale-levels.png" />
      </Frame>

      The displayed limits belong to this example. Set intervals according to your teaching proposal and check how the interface handles boundary values between ranges.
    </Accordion>

    Use clear names and establish what distinguishes one level from another. For example, what must participants demonstrate to move from **Developing** to **Adequate**?
  </Step>

  <Step title="Explain the levels in sign language" icon="hands">
    Each range has a **sign language video** field. Use it to explain the level’s meaning, performance characteristics and areas for development.

    Go beyond the level’s name: explain what it means in practice and connect it to the learning objectives.

    In the corresponding field:

    * Use **Upload video** to add the file.
    * Check the size limit indicated by the installation; the example shows **up to 250 MB**.
    * Add a **.vtt** subtitle file when available and appropriate. This field is optional in the screenshot.
    * Play the video and check that the explanation matches the correct range.

    The **IntSL Video** label belongs to the illustrated installation. Prepare the video in the sign language appropriate to your installation and audience.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review and finish" icon="check">
    Before selecting **Done**, check:

    * The title identifies the scale’s purpose.
    * Levels have clear, distinct names.
    * Ranges cover the full **0%–100%** interval, with boundaries reviewed.
    * Videos are attached to the correct levels and play properly.

    After finishing, check that the scale appears in the list.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  If a warning says the scale does not cover **0% to 100%**, review all range limits before finishing. For example, registering only a 60%–100% range leaves results below 60% unclassified.
</Warning>

## Use the scale in an activity

Open the activity’s **Evaluation Settings** and select the scale in the corresponding field. Then register the criteria and check their weights.

The activity’s criteria use the **same selected scale**. Check that its levels make sense for every aspect being observed.

## Check what participants see

The scale configuration helps participants interpret the levels shown in an assessment. When checking an activity, verify that the names and explanations match your intended reference.

A level such as **Good** or **Competent** depends on the selected scale; it does not necessarily represent the same interval in all tasks. Explain this reference to the class alongside the instructions and criteria.
