# Configure languages

Before translating, confirm with the technical team that the institution’s installation is prepared in its source language. The manual recommends completing this preparation to avoid limitations and rework.

## Where to go

Open **Translations → Configure languages (Configurar idiomas)**. The area separates **Text languages** and **Sign languages**.

## Define institutional languages

<Steps>
  <Step title="Check available options">
    Consult both lists. The manual gives English, Portuguese, German, French, Spanish, Estonian and Hungarian as examples; check availability in your installation.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check activation">
    In **Tables**, consult Language, Code, Active and Default. Use the available controls to enable the institution’s chosen languages.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the default">
    **Default** identifies the default language; only one can be marked at a time. It is different from the full list of active languages.
  </Step>
</Steps>

| Field | Meaning |
| - | - |
| Language | Language name. |
| Code | Identifier such as en, pt, de or et. |
| Active | Availability in the installation. |
| Default | Installation default. |

## Check before translating

Record the written languages and sign languages you will work on. Check that they appear in translation areas and in the interface where applicable.

<Note>
  The manual mentions a second stage, **Records**, but its behavior remains under validation. Do not make changes at that stage based on this guide until its operation is confirmed.
